It is said St Fanahan is buried inside the walls of the Abbey. Some of the inscriptions on the old stones are in very old Gaelic characters and it is to be regretted that some Gaelic scholar would not visit this most ancient burial ground and decipher some of those inscriptions and family names.
As St. Fanahan was amongst the earliest of our Irish Missionaries after St. Patrick very little was known or handed down except tradition. The monastery was raided by the Danes in later times. It was only when workmen were repairing the old Castle at Lismore that a book was found concealed in a wall, and a full account of the saints life and his monastery was given in it. The book is now in Trinity College Dublin and is one of the oldest and most valued of our old Irish Books. There is a stream running near the Abbey where the students used walk and it was called the stream of the learning
