- The following are some of the birds which frequent the district of Cornhill, Fermoy Co Cork — Crows, Hawks, Owls, Jackdaws and Magpies.
The crows build their nests on the tops of high trees. They make clumsy nests of sticks and line them with wool. They are supposed to begin building on the 1st of March but it is said that if this date falls on a Sunday they will not begin until the next day. They lay four eggs of a whitish colur and sit on them for about a month. When the day is to be wet the crow will not fly far from her nest.
The hawks are flesh eaters. They build their nests in the same places as crows and practically of the same material. They lay three or four brown eggs and sit on them for three weeks.
The owl is a fairly common bird also. She builds in old ruins and also in quarries. She lays two eggs of Mairlín grey colour and sits on them for about a month. The owl is a flesh eater and very often kills & eats mice.
Jackdaws or rooks are very common birds. They resemble crows but they are a little smaller and have a whitish tinge on their necks and breasts. They build their nests in unused(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
