- Shrove commences on the 6th of January and ends on Shrove Tuesday.
In former times it was part of the year when most marriages took place, especially in country districts. The wedding party generally arrived at the church in the evening long ago. Now they generally take place in the morning. Any pair who were fit to get married and did not on Shrove Tuesday were brought to "sceilg" and threatened to be drowned and often got a good ducking. This custom has died out now and it is no loss.
Long ago there was a fair held in Mallow on Shrove Tuesday and it was called the "runaway fair'. It was called this name because a number of pairs used go to this fair and in the evening run away and get married.
Up to the present day pancakes are made on Shrove Tuesday. On that night there is great feasting for the young folk.- Bailitheoir
