- In days gone by hurling and football matches were not played like they are played nowadays. This is how I heard an old person saying how the old people used to play matches:– They used to throw a ball up in the air and take it with them, and the team who first came back with the ball won the match. The cross country methods of playing were very cruel, but they improved from year to year. They used to play from ditch to ditch instead of having goal posts, and later on they used to have some buckets, and afterwards they used to have sticks and poles. The old people used to undergo very severe hardships, and many accidents occurred. Some of them used to fall into thorns, and nearly everyone of them was hurt in the tussle. There used to be lots of different games besides this played in this locality such as bowl-playing, handball playing re. There were many splendid football players in this locality namely, Mr. Pat Daly, Mr. Joe Leary, Mr John Flannery, Mr E. O'Keeffe, and Mr J. Barry, and many others. But the great game played in this locality was Gaelic Football, but of late years this game is a dead letter in this district.
