- Most people are familiar with the story of the famine years, and the horrors of the period are almost unbelievable.
The failure of the potatoes, the main food of the Irish people, was responsible for the fact that thousands of people died of hunger. Others fell ill from eating grass, and roots, and it was a common thing to find whole families dead in their houses. They were buried without coffins or proper funerals as to leave them lying around was dangerous owing to disease.
As a rule several corpses were interred in one large grave, as this was the quickest way to bury them.
