- During my holidays last year I visited Rostellan Castle, which is some distance from Midleton.
This Castle is of an enormous height, and has three hundred and sixty six windows, one for every day in the year. One of the windows was closed or darkened when the calendar was changed from three hundred and sixty six days to three hundred and sixty five. The closed door is for the leap year. There are fifty two doors in the Castle, one for every day in the year.
The Castle is built of massive grey stone with arches of every shape. The gray sea guards it on one side, and on the other side is a wood, which is still thick with trees. It is said that Brian Boru visited this Castle, and left a sword which is still there. It is also told that Brian Boru planted the first oak there.
"Brian Boru was a warrior true,
He fought his battles bravely
And to Rostellan he came down
And planted there an oak tree."
At the back of the Castle is a huge garden where once flowers and shrubs of every hue and description grew, and an orchard(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
