    banks of the White river about a mile to the south west of our school.
    The castle is supposed to have been built in the course of a night. The mortar with which it was built was said to be mixed with the blood of oxen. Shanid castle was build by the Normans. They divided the country into baronies, and a Norman knight ruled over each barony. Monemohill is in the barony of Shanid. Then the Geraldines , a branch of the Normans, took their war cry "Shanid abu" from this old castle, "Shanid abu" is still the motto of the Knight of Glin.
    In Danish times, Mahon the brother of Brian Boru, defeated the Danes in a battle between Shanid castle and Shanagolden. A battle was never fought at Shanid castle itself.
