  2. Shedding of Blood on St Martin's Eve

    It was the custom about fifty years ago in this district for the people to prick their fingers and shed their blood on St Patricks Day. With the blood they painted the cardboard crosses which the men wore on their shoulders and the women on the left side of their coats or frocks.
    It was a local belief that blood should be shed on St.Martin's Eve.

    If the people hadn't any fowl or small animals such as a kid from which to draw blood on St. Martins's Eve they pricked some part of their bodies - generally a finger - and allowed the blood to flow freely for some time.
    This custom was to told to me by John Scanlon formerly of Temple- Athea but now residing in Knockfinish, Athea. He is about 70 years of age.
