The old methods for giving light were called home made candles these candles were called bog deal splinters and mould candles. The bog deal splinters were made by cutting strips off a big piece of bog deal and dipping them in tallow. This tallow was made by themselves from the fat of the goats. The mould candles were made by means of a ladder they used to put the ladder across two chairs. The used to dip the wicks into the pot of tallow and leave it dry for an hour and then dip it again until it was thick enough. They used to hang it off the ladder and leave it set for a couple of days. There was also another way for making the candles called a mould this was a shape of a mould candle. They used draw the wick through the centre and pour the tallow around the wick. This was left set for a few days also.
