common belief that many of those wells were used by St. Patrick and other early Irish Saints to baptize the people in.
Within a radius of five miles of this district there are several of those Holy Wells.
Our Ladys well, or St. Dympna's shrine as it is sometimes called is situated near Castletown Conyers.
It lies near the hallowed ruin of an old abbey, there is a circular well worn pathway of about one hundred yards around the well, where the people make three full rounds reciting the Rosary as they walk. When those rounds are finished a drink of water is taken from the well and the glass is again filled and left for the next person. After this a visit is paid to a little stream or outlet from the well, where the face & hands are bathed.
About a generation ago this well was shut in with a high fence by order of the owner of the property to prevent people making the rounds. The result was the original well dried up while another beautiful spring bubbled up at the present site.
St Gubinets Well near Tullylease is another noted holy well. Many legendary anecdotes connected with a milk white stag are told by the old people.
