it, and the bread got from it was black, with long ribs out of it, that would choke them when they made an effort to swallow it. Alas! they were thankful for that same. On special occasions such as Shrove tuesday, they had scampie cakes, made out of grated potatoes, to revive the custom. They also had salty herrings for their poor meals. Their drink was skimmed milk, and they did not know what tea or coffee was, with the exception of the few farmers, who were not too badly off. In after years when tea was in abundance they relished it greatly. The vessels they used to drink out of, were called wooden piggins, with a handle on the side like a jug. The people who were healthy in those times, got up at the dark, and worked until dark again, as the old folk would say "We would be looking for our coats, and pawing the ground, it would be so dark".
