    were then used and were very useful and there are relics of them in every farmer's house yet. Its two principal advantages are to keep the fowl and other things outside and to prevent the children going out amongst the traffic.
    The fire was always at the gable-end of the house and the one bed they had was in the kitchen and at the right hand side of the fire. The windows were made of hard glass but although it was transparent they looked very ugly.
