   But as soon as he had eaten his full and sat back in his chair with nothing to do but think he began in spite of himself to grow nervous, and though he summed up strength of mind it did not suffice to chase away the fears that began to crowd upon him.

   He jumped up, shut and bolted the door and then to drown his thoughts a little went to the arched window and looked out. It was a beautiful night and the moon shone brightly in a colourless cloudless sky. All was still and everything as silent as the grave. He closed the window, walked round the room, and then threw himself fully dressed on the bed which seemed soft and comforting to
