- Long ago candles were made in the school. Each pupil brought a certain amount of tallow which was made from the fat of a cow. In the school there was kept a mould which was two bits of tin shaped like a candle and they were attached by another bit of tin. The inside of the mould was wetted so as the heated tallow would not stick to the mould. Then a thick thread was put strong, through a hole, in the hole and when hard it was taken out a candle.
