- On account of Ballysteen being more thickly populated in former times than presently it had numerous hucksters shops. At Beigh Castle, Mr Sheehy had the first about one hundred years ago. He got "bankrupt" after some time.About eighty years ago a woman nicknamed "Biddy Lar" had a shop. This woman was illiterate and she kept her accounts on the door of a press. She used the letter "x" to indicate pounds, a big "nought" for shillings and small nought for pence. She insisted that her customers should pay their bills every week and when they did so she walked to Limerick for small articles, which she brought home in a pack on her back.Mr John Downes began one a little way up from the castle and he sold all provisions. After this the Russel brothers had a shop and Patrick Holland had a public house. These shops were supported by the locals, as well as excursions which called at the castle going to, and coming from, Foynes and Glin. These shops were supplied by Messer's Glynn boat which came from Kilrush.
