  1. The local fairs are held in Askeaton and Rathkeale. They are held on the streets. Sometimes before a fair buyers go round to the farmers' houses and buy their cattle and sheep. Some farmers prefer to take their cattle to the fairs than to sell to these buyers.
    A local fair now discontinued is that of Stonehall. The fair of Stonehall was a lamb fair and was held on the 14th May. The carts attending the fair often stretched from McKnights cross to Castlegrey cross.
    All that remains to show us that a fair used to be held there is the piece of a green field opposite the Chapel known as the "Fair Green". The 14th May used to be a great day in the district long ago for an addition to the ordinary fair a fun fair used to be held. Three or four tents were often to be seen there. The fair day often ended in a faction fight. It was during one of these fights that the man was killed at the place now known as the "Bloody Gate" on Miss Taylor's estate in Hollypark. The fair has been discontinued because of the changed methods
