- Potatoes are sown in my farm every year. About a quarter acre of land is sown under potatoes. The crop seldom failed. A neighbouring man prepares the ground every year. The crop is always sown in ridges. A plough is generally used to plough them. Spades are bought in shops. Potatoes were the only food of the people long ago. The potatoes with the most eyes are sown. Wooden ploughs are not used. When the stalks are well over the ground they are sprayed. People help one another at the sowing of the potatoes. The children or the women pick the potatoes from the earth. In the month of October the potatoes are ploughed out. Then a pit is dug about two feet deep and the potatoes are stored in it. Potatoes are the only crop that is grown best in my district. Potatoes were used instead of starch. The local names of the potatoes are Champions, Irish Queens, Kerpinks, Epicures, UP to dates, American roses.
