    mixed with it when placing it on the wall. The walls rose slowly as time was required to set or harden the freshly tempered mud before too much weight was put on it.
    Roof: The rafters were usually larch poles laid on the walls and nailed or banded together on top and stengthened with light larch poles as collar braces. The rafters were from three to four feet apart. On them were nailed rough laths generally got by splitting fir or spruce. On these laths were laid the ? This was expertly cut in some old field of poor surface and allowed to dry well before being rolled on a stick to be laid as inside foundation for the thatch. These were then sewn to the laths with strong thatches of straw or reed.
    The thatch in some of those old houses was sometimes three feet thick at the eve. This thatch should project well over the walls to keep the moisture from them. As long as the ''drop'' was kept off the mud walls there was no fear of a split or bulge. But once the water got down the walls they immediately began to crumble. These walls when kept dry were as firm as any masonry and anybody removing one of them
