There is much sad history in connection with Towerhill. Many catholics were hanged on the trees by Cromwellians.
In the place where the churchyard now stands, was a Franciscan monastery. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the monastery was plundered by the English forces, and it was filled with members of their own creed. Towerhill House became a home for landlords. Several farmers were rack-rented by the landlord and were evicted by sherriffs and bailiffs. They were out of their homes until a satisfactory settlement was made,then they were reinstated in their old homes.
Towerhill House is now inhabited by a man named Devane, and the tower is a nesting place for the owls. A few yards from this, is the Parish graveyard which holds many of the victims. R.I.P.
