    Land Commission divided Redwood Estate - owned by Trench - amonst the people in 1930. A few migrants were brought from Clare and Galway, but the local people were lucky enough to get a good share of the farms, which ranged from 20 acres to 50 acres.
    Redwood derived its name from a wood which appeared red when seen from a distance. There are about 70 families in Redwood, including one woman aged 100, and two men of 80, and about 10 people over 70. The land is not hilly as a rule. A large portion of it consists of bog and wood. The Shannon divides Redwood from Co. Galway. There are hundreds of acres of Callows or low lying land flooded in the winter time, but a good many got compensation from the E.S. Board as the Shannon Scheme was supposed to be responsible for the flooding. Some people got as much
