Houses were more numerous locally in olden times but there are not many ruins standing.
There was not much emigration from here to America or England. A few young men went to England and joined the Irish Guards, within the last 10 years or so.
None of the old people know Irish there are very few who can relate stories even in English.
The majority of the houses is thatched and consists of two rooms and a kitchen. Some have an additional room built to the end of the house, and this is usually slated or galvanized.
There are no back doors in the old houses, and very seldom are windows seen on the back of the old houses.
There are "scraws" inside the thatch. These keep the old houses very warm. They are dug in the bog
