- Redwood Castle, formerly the seat of the ______MacEgans. High - Sheriffs of Tipperary in the most remarkable ruin in the School district. It is in the parish of Lorrha, townland of Redwood & Co. Tipperary. Donough Mac Egan was in possession of the Castle in 1602, and it was he and his army who attacked O'Sullivan Beare's army, while they were in the act of crossing into Connaught, on their way to O'Rourke's Castle in Breifni. Co Leitrim.In the fight MacEgan and several of his men lost their lives. O'Sullivan Beare's army crossed the Shannon at a place called White's Ford. They had to kill their horses for food and with the skin's of the animals they constructed some osier currachs, & covered them..
The place where the animals were slaughtered is known as "Poll na gCapall, and during the digging of some foundations for new Land Commsission Houses, both human bones & those of animals were dug up, & supposed to belong to that period.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
