Early that morning Clarke was riding on his chesnut horse past the stile with a cocked pistol in his pocket. as he passed the stile he heard a click of a gun which missed. He pulled the pistol from his pocket and shouted "come out, you coward". But Hawkins snapped the gun from Hayes and also shouted "here is Hawkins that never missed". It is said that he killed Clarke and had not to pay the rent that time. George Burns the man who planned the murder and who gave the three men money for their work afterwards turned informer to get(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
