1. Old Schools

   

   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   The only old school, of which we can find any account, was situated in the village of Clonakenny, a mile to the east of this, our present school. The Curate's house now stands on the site of the old school. The old building was a poor one, but was attended by many boys and girls. Unlike the present time, the boys and girls used remain going to school until they were almost twenty years of age. The name of the teacher was John Treacy and later Miss Murphy.
   The subjects principally taught were the three R 's' namely, Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. The two most noted books used were, a "spelling book", and a book known as "Readin Ma daisy" - probably "reading made easy".
   We were not able to find any account of local hedge schools or travelling school masters.
   Note. Since I learned the names of two "poor scholars", or travelling school masters, these were John Lambe and John Scully. The latter was supposed to have been a very clever man.
