    towards the first hole. If the marble goes into the first hole, the boy then fires from the edge of the first hole and tries to get the marble into the second hole. If the first boy fails to place his marble into hole number one, he leaves it on the ground, generally near the hole and the second boy has a shot from the line. If the second boy gets his marble into the hole he "slabs" at the other boy's marble. That is he holds his marble between finger and thumb and "fires" [?] it at the first marble; if he hits it, he must drive it a "bulk", that is, more than a span: a span is the distance between the top of the middle finger and the top of the thumb when the fingers are fully spread out. If he drives it a "bulk" this will count as a hole and this boy can now try to get into the third hole. If he fails to put in his marble he must now leave it on the ground near hole three and the third boy begins. He does the same as the others, and so on. Any number can take part in the game. The game is twelve holes, and to get into the twelveth or game hole
