To be sought for in society
    And lionized when there.
Each nation holds some freak aloft_
    Its own peculiar craze -
While Vice, with midnight torch in hand,
    Encircles with a blaze,
And oh! what horrid crimes appear
    Within that lurid flame!
    Has mankind lost his manliness?
    And womanhood her shame?
Will no one stop their mad career?
    Destruction looms ahead!
The flimsy joys of life but hide
    The abys dark and dread!
Good holy men of prayer + thought
Look on that wanton crowd _
Nor do they zeal + courage lack
    To voice their thoughts aloud.
They ask them in the name of God
    To mend their evil ways;
They point them out the duties
    Which should occupy their days
In vain they chide the lavish lore
    Bestowed on foolish brutes.
    While human hearts unnoticed, break
    From sorrow's cankered root _
