- Sheep are washed about the first of 1st May in order to clean the wool for shearing.
When sheep are being washed, a man puts on the oldest clothes he can get, and goes out into the river, where the water is about deep to cover a shep, then a second man on the bank throws out a sheep to the man int he river, and after he has washed the sheep he allows it to go back to the bank again.
Sometimes instead of going out int he river they tie the rope around the sheep's neck and throw it into the river, where it is left for some time and then pulled in again, and this is said to be much easier.
