- Candle Making
Long ago candles were made by nearly all the old men and women. When the people used to kill pigs or sheep they used to keep the lard or fat for frying purposes and whatsoever was left they made candles out of it. They put a long piece of thread which was made from wool, into a candle mould and then they melted the fat and poured it into the mould and left it to get hard and then they took it out and it was in the shape of a candle. Poorer people who had not all lard to make the candles made them from rushes. They got the thickest rushes they could and they dipped them in grease but these were not as good as the lard candles.
