- The name of this parish is Sologhead the Irish for which is Sulchóid, which is derived from the two words "Súl" the Sally-tree and "cóid" a wood i.e. "the wood of the Sally trees". There is no trace of this wood in the parish now, but most of the houses are thatched and attached to every house is a little plot of ground in which Sally trees are grown to supply "scollops" for thatching.The parish is divided in townlands some of the principal of which are:- Ballyryan: i.e. the townland of the Ryans.
