- A good lot of the old customs are still preserved in this district in connection with death and funerals. Whenever a person is seriously sick the neighbours call to house almost every day to enquire and console and often lend a hand in caring the sick person especially during the night if such care is necessary.
When a death occurs all unnecessary work is suspended and the people especially the women go to the corpse house during the day and the house is crowded all day with friends relatives and neighbours. There is always a plentiful supply of whiskey wine and stout and as the people come in turn they are treated by the mourners.
The corpse is washed and in the case of the men they are shaved and 'laid out' in a habit which is bought in the shop - usually of a brown colour. The bed is covered with white line and the sides of the bed are similarly covered and crosses of black tape are place at the foot the dead and the sides.
