  1. Most of the houses here are slated. They are more numerous now than about forty years ago. Some were repaired by the landlord. The landlord raised the walls and slated the roof. All the poor people's houses had half - doors. They had clay floors in the bedrooms. In the kitchen was a long seat called a settle - bed, where the people used to sleep in the daytime. The walls were always whitewashed inside and outside. The windows were always very small.
The roof was thatched with straw. The rafters could be seen inside. They mostly burned wood, because it was plentiful in the district.
The old people were very fond of having lids of cans and tin mugs hanging on the walls. They used to have them very clean and shining. The furniture was plain and rough.
The rooms were small and stuffy.
