When people meet a funeral when going on a journey they generally turn back and go in the funeral for a bit, and then they continue their journey.
On May Eve some people place a tongs across the wall so that the first person to the well on May morning for water could not take all the water, because they believe whoever comes first to well for water on May morning brings the water for the year out of the well.
On May morning people bring in some white thorn and make a cross of it and hang it on the rafters and leave it there until the following year. People also say that if a person goes out on May morning and meets a snail in his shell it is a sign that a young person in the locality would be married soon and that person's house would be beautifully furnished.
But if was an empty shell the person met there would not be very much furniture in the house that the person would be after getting married.
On Saint Brigid's Eve people used to leave their fires unquenched and their doors open and leave food on the table to show respect to Saint Brigid and her holy women who were supposed to pay a visit to all those who honoured her.
