These usually take place during Shrove or on St Patrick's Day.
It is usual here to have what they call "Picking of the Gander".
This means that a dance is got up by the young lady - the bride to be - and to this dance, the bridegroom to be has the privilege of inviting his friends. At this dance it is the custom to have "straw-boys" - these are locals who have or have not been invited to the said dance. They come in while the dance is in progress disguised and in doing this (disguising) much straw is used, hence the name. It is a usual thing for one amongst these straw-boys to bring the bride to be for a dance. These straw-boys when they appear must have the floor for a dance. After they have danced, refreshments are served and then they take their departure.
It has been an experience of mine to have been at one of these since I came to Coney Island. A farmer of Coney having been married two years ago on St Patrick's Day.
On the day of the wedding a royal reception was given - tar barrels lighted on the quay - and bugles blown. A dance was(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
