- In this part of the country more marriages take place during Shrove than at any other time of the year, because Shrove occurs between Advent and Lent. Before the Great War the Church forbade marriages during Advent and Lent, and at the present time, although it is lawful to marry during these times, most people choose some other time of the year. Certain Irish people entertain superstitious beliefs with regard to particular days or months for marriages. One old rhyme says:
" Monday for health
Tuesday for wealth
Wednesday, best day of all
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses
And Saturday no luck at all"
