- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)St James it is believed never came to Ireland but when he was in Spain the Spaniards came exploring along the coast and wherever they settled they built churches in honour of their Patron Saint so it is thought they landed here and raised a little church on our coast where the ruins are still visible to-day. The plot surrounding the well is called the Reilg which proves that at one time a church was built there and that it was the burial place.James is a very common name among the male population in Cooley as it is the name of their Patron Saint. Every mother likes to think that at least one of her sons has the powerful protection of Saint James with them all their lives.
