- Long ago the people used many peculiar ways of curing the different diseases which are common to all classes of people. These are very seldom availed of now. The old people were very superstitious and beleved that certain little rites and the use of certain objects produced a complete cure.
A very common cure for the mumps was to tie some insects called "gods horses" in a silk scarf and bind the cloth on the swollen neck and keep it there until the insects died. Another cure for this ailment was to rool in a pigs bed or to go in and out nine times right under an ass.
Another cure for warts was to wash it in forge water each day and this cleared it off in a very short time. Another cure thought to bring good results was to rub a black snail on the part and then tie the same snail on a briar bush. When the snail had rotted away the wart was supposed to die.
