- Long ago it was the custom at wakes to put the coffin containing the dead under a table in a out house or barn. A white cloth was spread over it and here the neighbours filed in to pay respect to the deceased.
Several times during the night pipes and tobacco were handed to the men women, girls and boys, and all who could smoked and enjoyed themselves. In order to keep sleep off snuff was was given round at intervals too. The fun and dancing was kept up for two nights.
Mock marriages were often made at these wakes. The parties went through the form of words and some man or boy present acted the part of minister.
