- My grandmother used to make candles out of rushes and candle sticks out of rushes also. This is how they were made. First they would peel the rushes and the pith that was inside the rush, was mixed with lard, and then it was made into a candle. Then a rush was dipped in special water and that was used for wick.
- James Crilly of Briar Hill used to make baskets and 'pellicks' out of sally sticks.
