had the advantage of awaiting signals from their own lines posted on the moats of Brittas Kilally, Clonmore and Johnstown. Other people are of opinion that Rathdrummion was once the seat of some mighty warrior at the time when the Hound of Ulster flourished. Many antiquarians have visited the place. I have seen the late Joseph Dolan of Ardee walk along its green banks, but neither Joseph Dolan nor any other interested person could unravel the mystery which lies buried there. All records of this once famous battle ground are buried in oblivion.
This moat is supposed to be the Headquarters of the good People and many of the old folk speak in whispers as they relate the antics of wee men dancing in the moonlight. One man crossing the fields often after sunset was called from the moat and found himself rambling around all night, and each time he returned to the same place the Good People cheered and laughed merrily.
For my own part I have never seen nor heard anything although I had slept there on several occasions during the troubled times.
