    The very poor had to eat potatoes three times a day. The labouring men had to work for two hours before breakfast. In the harvest time the people would sit on the floor around a skip of potatoes and eat them with buttermilk and salt.
    In some of the old farmers' houses the table used to be pulled of the side wall of the kitchen, and pushed back when not in use.
    The oaten bread was baked on a griddle. It was divided into four quarters, and potato cakes into the same, and wheaten into two parts. Tea only came into general use within the last sixty years. Before that only the old people would have a cup. In the first decade of the ninetheeth century tea was as dear as twelve shillings per pound.
    The farmers used to kill their own bacon. It used to be strong and fat, as the pig used to be old and heavy before he used to be killed
