Eileen O'Loughlin (13) Enfield. There are not much potatoes grown on our farm. It is according to the person who is sowing the potatoes that the land is taken up. Some big farmers sow acres of potatoes for pig-feeding and for their own use. The amount sown every year nearly always changes. The ploughman prepares the soil, by ploughing and harrowing it, and then he opens the drills and manure is put in.
Potatoes are sown in ridges in moor or bogland, and in drills in dry land or up-land. Drills are made with a plough, and ridges with a spade. Wooden ploughs were used up to about 20 years ago. they were heavier and more harder on the horses than the new light iron ones. There were no spades made locally.
Small potatoes are sowed in the round, and the larger ones are cut into three or four pieces each piece having what people call(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
