    Long ago it was the custom in this district with with the people to make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. The make them out of flour and they put eggs and sometimes and sometimes butter and sugar in them. They wet them with sour milk. They had another custom for their dinner and they put a ring in it. The person who would get the ring would (the) be married before that day twelve month. They had another custom of people getting married on Shrove Tuesday because the could not get married in Lent.
