  1. There are a great variety of birds around our homestead. The most beautiful songsters are the Thrush and Black-bird and Robin. Then there are the Wren, the Goldfinsh, the Sparrow, the Pigeon, the black distructful Crow, and the Magpie. In Summer the seven sleepers return,
    "The Bee the Bat, the
    Butterfly, the Cuckoo,
    and the swallow, the
    Corncrake, the Weather Blake;
    They bid us all good morrow".
    The Cuckoo comes in April and as soon as the first ear of corn shoots out he goes. There is a great amount of trees around our home and the birds collect and build their nests. The Black bird lays four green eggs. The thrush lays five speckled eggs. The robin lays five very small white speckled eggs. The wren lays eighteen eggs and the pigeon lays two. It is the sign of a wind storm to see the crows
