- My Grandfather gave me a description of the Famine times. He told me that there were eight million of a population in the country at that time. There are old houses, or the walls of them in several places in the district. The old people were astonished how the blight came and ruined all the potatoe - crop. The potatoed were cut down by the blight before they formed atall. The year before this great famine the people would not dig all there potatoes or cover them. That was the first time that Indian - meal was introduced in the Indian - meal was the principal food for all that could afford to buy it.
There was alot of oats and barley grown, but it had to be sent to England to pay rent. The people were often found lying dead along the ditches and their mouths stained with eaten grass. There followed a great sickness, and people died in great numbers with starvtion and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
