- In old times there were no national schools as the British Government did not want the Irish to be educated. But the people taught themselves secretly. They had what was called Hedge Schools. Those were open air classes held at night and the school master who taught the people was paid by the farmers who could afford presents of potatoes milk. Nobody dared to speak of the schools to the Policemen or the school master would be arrested and put in jail.
There were many of those schools throughout Ireland but the only one I know of in our district was one held on the back Fennor road. On certain nights appointed a number of people assembled on that road under a big bush. In(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
