The churndash is always moved upwards and downwards.
On a churndash the sign when the butter is done is by the sound of the milk. On a barrel churn there is a glass and when the glass is clear the butter is done. In winter water is poured into the churn to heat up the milk or it would not churn.
When the churn is done the butter is taken off the milk and put in a wooden dish. Then it is washed until the water is clear and there is not a single drop of milk in the butter.
Then it is salted, the salt is put on it according to the amount of butter.
