- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)in a ring the teacher. There were no blackboards used in those days. The teachers used to remain a year in each district.
- There was a hedge school in this district in the Penal Days. It existed at the Red Cross on Slane Road ½ mile south of Grange. The teacher's name was Mr. Bellew. He was a stranger. He used to lodge in other people's houses. He would teach in the fields and under the hedges. The subjects they had were English writing and English reading. It was on slates they would write, and they used stone as pencils. The children used to sit in a ring around the teacher.
- To sharpen their pencils they kept a flat flag of stone outside the school door. They would rub the point of the slate pencils to the flag until there is a sharp point on the top of it.
