- The Local FairsWritten by Julia Gilligan, Dromone, 15-3-38There are two fairs held in Oldcastle once every month, namely, the cattle fair and the pig fair. Fairs are always held in towns. Buyers often come to houses to buy cattle, and horses, and sheep. In Oldcastle the fairs are held in the fair green and on the streets. When cattle are sold they put a mark on them with raddle and sometimes they cut off a bit of hair off their backs with scissors. When people sell cattle and pigs they give a "luck penny" for luck. There have been no fairs held in Dromone (a village which is about half a mile from our school) for several years. The reason for the discontinuation is explained in the following local rhyme:-
"Sweet Dromone, you stand alone,
An ancient village town,
There was no fair nor market there, Since Cromwell came around".- Bailitheoir
