In Curlin Mountnugent Co Cavan there lived a man named Phil Maguire and he and two companions set out for Carrick. Tom was a great swimmer and also a very brave man. Just as they entering the boat a flock of swans came down and sat on the boat.
This is an evil omen on Lake Sheelin, and his companions asked Phil not to go but Phil set out with the other two. Just when they were in the middle of the lake a squall arose and the boat capsized. Tom dived into the water and commenced to swim. The others held on to the boat and drifted ashore. Tom however was drowned. The crowd on the top of the rock witnessed this spectacle and a prayer was offered for them. On that day as much money was collected as paid for the chapel, and there was £25 over.
