The people of the district always considered it unlucky to interfere with the moat. There is still a belief, locally, that an opening into moat exists.
It was from my brother Thomas, who heard the story from Moore & Mullen, that I got the tradition of the raising of the moat.
The name of the person to whom the moat was erected as burial mound, is unknown in the district.
